History of Organization
In April of 1994 two organizations merged – the Wautebek Training Institute and Nda-Gkenjge-Gamig Educational Institute.  The merger created a new organization that is now known as Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute.  Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute is committed to the provision of educational services that complement First Nation’s education delivery in meeting the needs of all learners in school and post-school programs.  Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute is a non-profit incorporated organization that serves a membership of eight First Nation communities.  The Institute began with five (5) staff and today has a compliment of 18 along with various contractual staff.  The primary function of the Institute is to provide educational initiatives to its member population of over 6,800 people.

Mandate of the Organization
The Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute is an Anishnaabe controlled and directed education organization that strives to provide a comprehensive, qualitative, cultural and holistic approach to First Nations based education, training and services. The Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute will continue to strive for educational autonomy utilizing a progressive and community-based approach.

Kenjgewin Teg accomplishes its mandate by:

  • Fostering the development of culturally inclusive curriculum, research, and training in the member First Nation communities and non-member First Nation communities;
  • Educating and informing the communities through the appointed Board representatives on various First Nation education endeavours;
  • Forming partnerships and linkages to enhance learning opportunities to the member communities; and
  • Assisting the membership in various policies, procedures, and negotiations as it relates to their educational needs.
