Overview The Shki-maajtaawin E-nmok project is a progressive initiative involving the partnership between Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute, the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation and the Rainbow District School Board to develop culturally inclusive curriculum from elementary to secondary school levels. The goal is to provide teachers, parents, and schools with a curriculum that includes and reflects Anishinaabe values, content and knowledge, so all our children, Anishinaabe and non-Anishinaabe, can learn about the People and the Traditions of this land.
Curriculum Development Seventy-two (72) draft units of study have been developed for the elementary division. From the drafts, 12 units of study have been developed during the 2006-07 fiscal year. These units units of study have been piloted and will be available in March 2007. An additional 12 units of study have been recently completed and will be piloted during the coming months. The goal is to have a series of units for every grade from kindergarten to grade eight and in a number of First Nation schools and Provincial schools with the Rainbow District School Board. Five secondary courses have been developed and more are being completed this year. Resource Development The project continues to evaluate the resources required to support the curriculum units of study. Videos have been produced to support the delivery of the curriculum. Teachers have requested the development of these resources and more. Wigwam, The Pow Wow, Niimidwin, Pictographs and Healing Circle have all been developed. Words, Music and Movement, a CD of songs and music to be used within the curriculum features original songs that will teach Ojibwe through action and music. Traditional music of local artists is included so that students will gain an appreciation for the culture. A beautifully illustrated Wildlife Picture Book and a Colouring Book have been created to accompany the units of study for kindergarten. Poetry was also written to enrich learning for students. The books have been translated in Ojibwe so that they can also be used as a resource for language teachers. A number of books have been illustrated and written that are also available and used to accompany curriculum developed so far. Resource Centre and Website A Resource Centre was established to include books, video kits and historical documents that support the project and are available to teachers, parents and community members. The Shki-maajtaawin E-nmok website will be redesigned at a later date so that it will also support the project and teachers using the units of study. Our Web site http://www.shki.ca/ is currently under reconstruction, however you can visit the site and order our materials. We will have it up and running soon. Advisory Committee An Advisory Committee comprised of elders and good life teachers will be reestablished to provide guidance and support to the project team and the partners.
